When the United Nations asked its member nations to assist South Korea, the Norwegian government decided to send the 1st (Norwegian) Army Surgical Hospital, known as NORMASH. The Surgical Hospital departed Norway on May 31, 1951, and upon arrival in Korea the unit supported the US 1st Corps in Dongduchon. During its stay, the medical staff of the unit performed over 9,000 operations and treated approximately 90,000 personnel.
