MPVA Did You Know Series #3:

DID YOU KNOW That There Is an International Sports Event for Veterans?

Invictus Games

The Invictus Games is a global sporting event that celebrates the resilience and courage of wounded, injured, and sick military personnel. Established by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the first Games took place in London in 2014, inspired by the U.S. Warrior Games. The name Invictus, meaning unconquered in Latin, represents the unbreakable spirit of veterans who overcome adversity through sport.

The Invictus Games aims to promote recovery, rehabilitation, and respect for military personnel worldwide. The Games feature nine core sports, including archery, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and indoor rowing, with additional events depending on the host city. Over the years, the competition has grown significantly, with participation from more than 20 nations, including South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, and France.

South Korea’s Participation and Achievements

South Korea was officially invited to the 2020 Invictus Games in The Hague, Netherlands, which was postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19. Making its debut, the South Korean team sent 11 athletes to compete in four sports.

At the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, South Korea expanded its participation, competing in eight sports with 11 athletes, in which Team Korea showcased outstanding performances.

The most recent Invictus Games took place in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada, from February 8 to 16, 2025, introducing winter sports for the first time. The next Games is set to take place in Birmingham, UK, in 2027.

Looking Ahead to 2029

South Korea has expressed its interest in hosting the 2029 Invictus Games in Daejeon, aiming to further support veterans and strengthen global camaraderie. The bidding process is ongoing, and the country continues to engage with the Invictus Games Foundation as it seeks to bring this prestigious event to East Asia for the first time.

“Your leadership did not end when you stepped off the battlefield or took off the uniform. It endures. The example you set is a compass for the world.”
