MPVA Did You Know (DYK) Series #8:

DID YOU KNOW that Korea is thanking its uniformed heroes through popular games?

In a bold move to bring national remembrance into everyday life, Korea launched a campaign thanking uniformed personnel — through e-sports. Yes, you read that right.

Korea launched a campaign thanking uniformed personnel — through e-sports. Yes, you read that right.

In 2024, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA) partnered with League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) to recognize the service of Korea’s military personnel, police officers, firefighters, correctional officers, and coast guards. These everyday heroes were honored on a stage many younger Koreans know best — the arena of professional gaming.

The Uniformed Personnel Appreciation Campaign ran throughout the LCK Summer Season, with campaign booths, public service messages during broadcasts, and themed in-game content. Uniformed personnel and their families were invited to matches and special events, while proceeds from merchandise and digital items were donated to support those in service.

At the LCK Summer Finals in Gyeongju, uniformed personnel even joined influencers for friendly exhibition matches streamed live to thousands of fans. It wasn’t just a show — it was a signal: gratitude can be modern, relevant, and proudly visible.

The campaign reflects a broader trend, too. Around the world, e-sports is being recognized not just as entertainment, but as a platform for inclusion, rehabilitation, and global connection. The Invictus Games, an international competition for wounded and injured veterans, has explored adding e-sports to its roster. In countries like Ukraine, veterans are already training and competing in organized e-sports programs — forging new bonds of camaraderie and resilience.

Few countries are better positioned than Korea to lead this evolution. With its unmatched gaming culture, global fanbase, and deep respect for those in uniform, Korea stands ready to take the global stage in e-sports diplomacy — and set a powerful example of modern remembrance.
