6·25전쟁 70주년을 맞는 뜻 깊은 해에 폴 커닝햄 한국전쟁참전용사협회회장님을 비롯한 미국 참전용사 여러분을 뵙게 되어 정말 기쁘고 반갑습니다.
대한민국의 영웅 분들을 모시는 자리에 참석해주셔서 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.
(순차통역) I am very pleased to meet you, US veterans of the Korean War and President Paul Cunningham of Korean War Veterans Association, particularly because this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for being with us to welcome the heroes of the Republic of Korea.
또 이 자리에는 6.25전쟁에 참전하셔서 조국을 지켜주신 손경준 6.25참전유공자회 워싱턴지회 회장님을 비롯한 재미교포 참전용사님들도 참석해 주셨습니다. 진심으로 감사의 인사를 드립니다.

참전용사 여러분,
여러분께서는 70년 전, 낯선 땅, 낯선 나라의 국민들을 지키기 위해 기꺼이 태평양을 건너셨습니다. 포연이 휩싸인 전쟁터, 생사를 장담할 수 없는 상황에서도 여러분께서는 투혼을 보여주셨습니다.
(순차통역) Dear Veterans,
Seventy years ago, you were willing to cross the Pacific Ocean to protect the people you never met in the country you never heard. You showed your unwavering determination in a battlefield filled with gun smoke, when you could not guarantee your life or death.
특히 미국은 가장 먼저, 가장 많은 용사들이 한반도에서 목숨을 걸고 싸웠습니다. 안타깝게도 가장 큰 희생을 감내해야 했던 나라 역시 미국이었습니다.
(순차통역) In particular, the US veterans were the first brave souls to risk their lives, fighting in the Korean peninsula. Unfortunately, the United States was also the country that had to endure the greatest sacrifice.
여러분과 모든 미국 참전용사 분들의 희생과 공헌 덕분에 대한민국은 자유와 평화를 지켜냈고, 이를 토대로 오늘의 번영을 이룰 수 있었습니다. 우리 정부와 국민을 대표해 깊은 경의를 표합니다.
(순차통역) Thanks to the sacrifices and contributions of you and all the American veterans, the Republic of Korea safeguarded freedom and peace, and we were able to achieve today's prosperity. On behalf of our government and people, I express my deepest respects to you.
저는 대한민국 국가보훈처장으로 취임하기 전 서울에 있는 전쟁기념관의 관장으로 일했습니다. 그곳에는 6·25전쟁에서 소중한 목숨을 잃은 3만7천564명의 미군들을 포함한 유엔군 전사자 명비가 소중하게 모셔져 있습니다.
(순차통역) Before taking office as the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, I worked as the Director of the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul. The War Memorial houses precious monuments of the names of the fallen soldiers of the United Nations, including 37,564 US soldiers who lost their precious lives during the Korean War.
저는 대한민국 보훈처 초청으로 방문하신 각 나라의 참전용사들께서 전사자 명비에 새겨진 전우의 이름을 발견하시곤 눈물을 흘리시는 모습을 자주 봤습니다.
(순차통역) I saw several times that veterans from UN sending states who visited at the invitation of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea often shed tears when they found the names of their fallen comrades on the monuments.
전사자 명비는 한국과 참전국 국민, 그리고 참전용사님들께서 전쟁 영웅과 전우를 기억하고 추모하는, 그런 울림을 주는 공간이었습니다.
(순차통역) The monuments dedicated to the fallen soldiers are meaningful place where Korea, people of the sending states, and the veterans of the war remember and pay tribute to war heroes and fellow soldiers.
이곳 워싱턴 D.C. 한국전쟁 기념공원 내에 건립될 예정인 ‘추모의 벽’ 역시 세계인들의 가슴에 미국 참전용사 분들을 새기는 소중한 유산이 될 것입니다.
(순차통역) The Wall of Remembrance, which will be built in the Korean War Memorial in Washington DC, will also be a precious legacy that engraves the US veterans into the hearts of the people around the world.
대한민국 정부는 참전용사 분들의 그 따뜻한 인류애를 기억하고, 혈맹으로 맺어진 한미동맹이 더욱 굳건해 질 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다는 말씀을 드립니다.
(순차통역) The Korean government remembers the warm humanity of the veterans and promises that we will actively support the US-Korea alliance that was forged in blood.
올해 6·25전쟁 70주년을 맞아 참전용사님들과 가족 분들을 한국으로 모시고, 또 이곳 미국에서도 위로·감사행사와 추모음악회를 준비하고 있습니다. 많은 분들이 함께해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
(순차통역) On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War this year, we are inviting veterans and their families to Korea, and we are also organizing appreciation and tribute events and a memorial concert here in the US, and we would appreciate if a lot of people could join us.
오늘 이 자리가 조촐하지만 대한민국이 여러분께 드리는 작은 성의로 생각해 주시고, 편안한 시간되시기 바랍니다.
