존경하는 메사추세츠주 한국전 참전용사와 가족 여러분!

그리고 오늘 뜻 깊은 자리를 마련해주신
찰리 베이커 주지사님과 김용현 보스턴 총영사님, 그리고 서울에서 분주한 일정 중에도 참석해 주신 김정훈 국회의원님,
이태식 전 주미 한국대사님, 대한민국 전통음악을 들려드리고자
이 곳까지 오신 부산국립국악원 연주자 여러분과
내외 귀빈 여러분!

and former Korean Ambassador Lee Taesik to the US, Korea traditional instrument players from
Busan National Gugak Center who came from Korea!

대한민국 정부와 국민을 대표하여 참전용사와 가족 여러분께
감사의 말씀을 전하기 위해 먼 길을 달려왔습니다.
지난 8일 서울을 출발해, 9일 워싱턴 D.C.에서 미국군 포로?실종전사장병 유가족들을 뵙고, 오늘 여기서 메사추세츠주 참전용사 여러분과 가족들을 이렇게 직접 뵙고 보니,
보스턴에 오길 정말 잘했다는 생각이 듭니다.
(순차통역) I have come a long way to represent the government and people of Korea here and to express our gratitude to the veterans and their families. I left Seoul on Wednesday, met the families of those unaccounted-for from the Korean War on Thursday in Washington, D.C. and today I am here in Massachusetts. It is a long journey, but meeting you in person makes me think it was worth it.

68년 전, 미국을 비롯한 유엔참전용사들은 ‘알지도 못하는 나라, 만난 적도 없는 사람들’의 자유?평화와 안녕을 지키기 위해 대한민국을 향해 출발했습니다.
그 어려운 첫 걸음을 가능케 했던 것은 오직 자유와 평화를 지키려는 책임감과 인류애였다고 생각합니다.

(순차통역) 68 years ago, UN veterans of the Korean War, including US veterans left for Korea, the country they never heard to defend the people they never met. What made them take on their journey was their mission to protect the noble cause of freedom and peace and great humanitarianism.

비록 늦었지만, 오늘 한 분 한 분께
‘평화의 사도 메달’을 드리게 되어 영광으로 생각합니다.
유엔의 깃발 아래 자유민주주의와 평화 수호를 위해 목숨도 아끼지 않았던 여러분이 진정한 ‘평화의 사도’이십니다.

(순차통역) Although it is late, I feel privileged to present the Ambassador for Peace Medal to each veteran today. You are the real Ambassador for Peace who risked your own life to defend freedom, democracy and peace under the UN flags.

유엔참전용사와 가족 여러분!

(순차통역) UN veterans and families!

낯선 땅에서 흘린 피, 그리고 가족을 떠나보내고
걱정과 슬픔으로 흘린 눈물은 결코 헛된 것이 아니었습니다.
여러분이 지켜주신 평화를 바탕으로 대한민국은 눈부신 경제성장과 민주화를 이루었습니다.

(순차통역)Your blood shed in an unknown land and the tears of your families who endured the pains and grief from missing the family were never in vain. Based on the peace you protected for us, the Republic of Korea has achieved the remarkable economic development and democratization.

대한민국 정부와 국민들은 유엔참전용사들을 영원히 기억할 것이며, 참전을 결심했던 그때 그 순간을 자랑스럽게 이야기할 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.
(순차통역)The government and people of Korea will forever remember the UN veterans and do our best to make you proud whenever you talk about your decision to serve in the Korean War.

68년 전, 한국전에 참전했던 22개 참전국과
41개 물자지원국 모두 우리 대한민국의 소중한 친구입니다.

(순차통역) All those 22 countries 68 years ago that provided combat troops to Korea as well as 41 other countries that provided Korea with material support are good friends of Korea.
하지만 저는 오늘 이 자리를 빌려, 미국과 미국군에
특별히 감사의 말씀을 전하고 싶습니다.

(순차통역)Having said, I want to express my special thanks to the US and US troops.

유엔참전용사 195만 명 중 90%가 넘는 179만 명이 미국군이었고, 이 중 10만이 넘는 장병들이 큰 희생을 치루었습니다.
대한민국에 따뜻한 손길을 내밀어주었던
미국의 젊은 청년들을 잊지 않겠습니다.

(순차통역) That's because more than 90% of the 1.95 million UN troops, 1.79 million were American, and among them more than 100,000 made a big sacrifice. We will never forget all those young Americans who offered us warm helping hands.
지금 대한민국에는 변화의 바람이 불고 있습니다.
오래도록 열망해온 항구적인 평화가 한반도에 정착될 수 있는 역사적인 전환점에 서있습니다.

(순차통역) Now changes are being made in the Republic of Korea. We are at the historical turning point where permanent peace will be established on the Korean peninsula.

지난 7월, 미국과 북한이 미군 유해발굴을 위한 북한 내 공동조사에 합의하였으며, 7월 27일 6·25전쟁 정전협정 65주년을 맞아 북한에서 전사한 미군 유해 55구가 오산의 주한미공군기지로 송환되었고, 8월 1일 하와이에서, 본국으로 돌아온 이들을 맞이하는 추모식이 있었습니다.
