Honourable Australian veterans and distinguished guests!
I am Pi Woo-jin, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

First, I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land upon which we are gathering and pay my respects to their Elders past and present and to any Elders here with us this morning.
우선, 우리가 모여 있는 이 땅의 원 주인들께 사의를 표합니다. 과거와 현재의 애보리진(호주 원주민) 원로들, 그리고 오늘 이 자리에 우리와 함께 해주신 원로들이 계시다면 그 분들께도 경의를 표합니다.
멜번 지역 참전용사 분들의 오랜 염원이던 한국전참전기념비 제막을 여러분과 함께하게 되어 매우 뜻 깊게 생각합니다.
This is very meaningful for me to join you in the unveiling of the Melbourne Korean War Memorial, which has been long awaited by the veterans in the community of Melbourne.
먼저, 오늘 자리에 함께해주신 토마스 파킨슨 호주 참전용사회장님을 비롯한 참전용사와 유가족 여러분께 경의를 표합니다.
First and foremost, I would like to pay tribute to President Thomas Parkinson of the Korea Veterans Association of Australia, his fellow veterans and bereaved family members who have graced the ceremony with their presence.
또한, 기념비 건립을 위해 애쓰신 최종곤 위원장님과 로빈 스캇 빅토리아주 보훈부장관님, 그리고 이백순 주 호주대사님과 관계자 분들께도 깊이 감사드립니다.
I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to President Choi Jong-gon of the Melbourne Korean War Memorial Committee, the Honourable Robin Scott, Minister for Veterans of Victoria, Ambassador Lee Baek-soon of the Republic of Korea to Australia and all those who have been involved in the construction of the Memorial for the hard work.
저는 오늘 다리 형태로 건립된 기념비에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다.
이 기념비는 앞으로 혈맹으로 맺어진 한국과 호주, 그리고 두 나라 국민들을 잇는 가교 역할을 할 것입니다.
Today, I was deeply impressed by the Memorial that has been built in the shape of a bridge.
The Memorial will act as a bridge between Korea and Australia and between the people of the two strong allies.
또한 참전용사와 전후 세대가 교감하는 상징물로서 특별한 의미가 있다고 생각합니다.
I also believe that it has a special meaning as a symbol of interaction between veterans and the postwar generation.
여러분!
한국이 전쟁이라는 큰 위기에 직면했을 때 호주는 세계에서 두 번째로 빠른 참전을 결정해 우리 국민에게 큰 희망을 안겨주었습니다.
Ladies and gentlemen!
When Korea faced a big crisis in times of war, Australia was the second in the world to decide to send troops to the country and gave great hopes to the people of the Republic of Korea.
무려 만 칠천여 명의 용사를 파견해 가평전투를 포함한 여러 전선에서 혁혁한 공을 세웠습니다.
As many as 17,000 brave Australian soldiers were sent to many battlefronts, including Gapyeong, and rendered distinguished services.
그 덕분에 대한민국은 오늘날의 자유와 평화, 그리고 눈부신 경제성장을 이룰 수 있었습니다.
Thanks to them, the Republic of Korea has been able to achieve freedom, peace and brilliant economic development of today.
우리 정부와 국민을 대표해 대한민국을 지켜낸 영웅들과 그 분들을 기꺼이 보내주신 유가족 분들께 진심어린 감사와 추모의 마음을 바칩니다.
On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Korea, I would like to express sincere gratitude and condolence to our heroes who successfully defended the nation and their family members who never hesitated to send them to Korea.
여러분!
이제 대한민국은 여러분께 받은 뜨거운 인류애를 보답하는 나라가 됐습니다.
Ladies and gentlemen!
The Republic of Korea has become a country capable of returning the love you showed us.
대한민국 정부는 매년 1만 6천여명의 유엔 참전용사와 유가족 분들에 대한 재방한 초청, 현지 위로‧감사행사를 실시하고, 저소득 유엔 참전국에 대한 지원사업도 추진하고 있습니다.
Annually, the government of the Republic of Korea hosts the Revisit Korea Programme and appreciation events in local communities of UN Sending States which are open to approximately 16,000 UN Korean War veterans and their family members.
The Korean government is also working on programmes to support less privileged countries which participated in the Korean War.
현재는 레바논과 소말리아를 비롯한 열두 개 나라에 한국군을 파견하여 평화유지 활동에도 나서고 있습니다.
The Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea now conduct peace-keeping activities in twelve countries, including Lebanon and Somalia.
이 모든 것들은 전쟁으로부터 대한민국을 지켜냈기에 가능한 일입니다.
All of these have been possible as the Republic of Korea was successfully defended against the war.
다시 한 번 오늘 제막식에 함께해주신 모든 분들께 감사드리며, 여러분 가정에 항상 축복이 가득하시길 기원합니다.
